An expert independent evidence review published today by Public Health England concludes that e-cigarettes are significantly less harmful to health than tobacco and have the potential to help smokers quit smoking. It is well established that quitting tobacco smoking is most successful with ongoing behavioural support10. This principle should be extended to also support quitting of e-cigarettes. Further research is required to establish what type of tailored behavioural support would be most successful in aiding people to stop using e-cigarettes. In addition, more research is required into which medicinal options would be most helpful to support quitting e-cigarettes. ACGIH defines the threshold limit value–ceiling (TLV–C) as the concentration that should not be exceeded during any part of the working exposure; the TLV-C for formaldehyde is 0.3 mg m3, and, for acrolein, is 0.23 mg/m3. Three of five liquids of the second brand tested exceeded the formaldehyde ceiling level by 2.0-fold to 13-fold, depending on the liquid flavor. All flavored products of the third brand tested exceeded the formaldehyde ceiling level by 2.9-fold to 66-fold and four products of the same brand exceeded the acrolein ceiling by 1.5-fold to 6.0-fold.
