 From the classic bubble tea to the polarizing stinky tofu, Taichung has a variety of local cuisines and street food that you must try. When it comes to enjoying Taichung’s street food, locals typically prefer to eat on the go or while standing up. It’s not uncommon to see people walking around with a skewer of grilled meat or a hot bowl of noodle soup in hand. To understand the history behind Taichung’s local cuisine and street food, you need to delve into the city’s rich cultural background. Taichung has long been a melting pot of different cultures and traditions, including those of the indigenous Taiwanese, Chinese, and Japanese. Taipei has a handful of night markets for those who want to shop and eat on the streets at night. Not necessarily the healthiest, but the taste is so good. Among the various culinary delights that you can find in Batam, seafood might be the best choice. Considering that Batam is a coastal area, you can enjoy fresh and cheap seafood dishes. If you’re traveling with kids, don’t miss the Science Museum. It has interactive exhibits, anImax Space Theater, and a life-sized dinosaur reconstruction. While roti bakar is the main pull here, feel free to try out their other offerings to further complete your meal, such as nasi lemak or their noodle dishes. You can find stinky tofu at every night market though a good place to try it in Taipei is at a restaurant called Dai’s House of Unique Stink. From what I’ve read, they’ve had to move shop seven times since opening because of the awful stench. It was our first trip here so I wanted to focus on the traditional, but this hipster side of Tainan is something we’ll definitely be exploring on our next trip to the city. As described in a previous section of this guide, it was formerly known as Fort Zeelandia and served as a major trading post and stronghold for the Dutch army and navy. In Taitung City, there are several cute little restaurants and craft beer bars at Railway Art Village. The small Taitung Night Market (台東觀光夜市) takes place in front of Sheraton Hotel from Thursday to Saturday. With two nights, base yourself in one of the towns I recommend for two nights and explore the region by scooter or bicycle.
